The notch is one of the most talked about feature in smartphones recently, with various OEMs adopting the feature for their smartphones since Apple did it with iPhone X. It has an infamous reputation in the tech market with some users liking the feature while others hating it with their lives. However, just when we thought we have seen all sorts of notches on smartphones, Xiaomi has patented a design will leave us feeling some type of way.

The patent reveals sketches of a new smartphone design with several possible variations. The notch as detailed by the sketches in the patent filed by Xiaomi sticks up the top edge of the smartphone, literally.

These designs reveal the front camera accommodated in the bizarre notch. The smartphone also seems to have a proper earpiece on the top of the screen. The backside of the reverse-notch is just empty, which seems like a wasted opportunity to implement some new features such as the phone’s branding or the rear camera’s LED flash to the device. A notch that sticks up past the edge of the display should at least justify its reason for being that way, just the inclusion of a front-facing camera in order to achieve an edge-to-edge display does not quite cut it.

Moreover, by the looks of the sketches, it does not seem like the smartphone will have a mass appeal as reversing the notch somehow looks uglier than the original notch. However, not all patents from companies make it to the production house, so there are chances that Xiaomi has been experimenting with different designs in order to make its phone stand out in the age of technology where all phones look the same.
