Xiaomi Mi 8

Xiaomi is gearing up to launch the successor of Mi 8, which was released in May last year, on February 20 at an event in Beijing. Xiaomi took on the Chinese social media site Weibo to make the announcement of the launch of the Mi 9. The company on its post on Weibo stated that the Mi 9 would be a ‘super-powerful’ flagship in 2019, and called it the ‘best looking Mi phone so far.’

The Mi 9 is being manufactured under the code name ‘Battle Angel.’ Xiaomi will release the device on the same day Samsung is releasing its flagship S10-lineup, which will be released at Samsung’s Unpacked event in San Francisco.

Based on one of the images shared, Xiaomi Mi 9 could come with a triple camera module, which are aligned vertically. The poster that Xiaomi shared shows the company’s brand ambassador in China Wang Yuan holding a device, which is likely the Mi 9 that launches next week.

Xiaomi is also hosting an event at the Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona on February 24. The company is expected to globally launch the Mi 9 at this event along with its foldable phone, the teaser of which was surfaced online recently. Xiaomi is also expected to showcase the 5G variant of the Mi Mix 3 at the event.

In terms of specifications, there have been various leaks suggesting that the Mi 9 will sport a  6.4-inch AMOLED screen with an edge-to-edge screen and renders claim that it will come with a waterdrop notch at the front. The phone is expected to come with a 24W fast charging support, nevertheless, some reports have also claimed at 32W fast charging support for the device.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun hinted that the Mi 9 has fast charging support while he was promoting the Redmi Note 7 phone. The Mi 9 is expected to come with a 3500mAh battery with wireless charging support thrown in the mix.

Previously leaked specifications of the Mi 9 suggest that the device will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC, which means the device will be supporting 5G carriers. Mi 9 will likely come with multiple RAM options starting from 6GB to 8GB RAM. A 10GB RAM variant could also be on the cards.

In terms of camera, the speculated triple camera module on the phone could compromise a 48MP+12MP+3D Time of Flight (ToF) sensor lineup. At the front, the device is expected to have a 24-megapixel sensor.

Mi 9 will start at a price of Yuan 2999 (approx ₹31,566) for the base version.
