Hammerson and Irish Life had applied to open a 24 hour casino in Dunlin. However, their request was denied by the authorities.

Hammerson is a UK property group and Irish Life is an insurance group who jointly own the Ilac Shopping Centre in Dublin.

They intended to convert a vacant retail unit into casino, for which they had applied to City Council for the permission was denied as the Council did not vote in their favour.

Previously, the vacant space hosted clothing brand Jack and Jones which the companies wanted to convert into casino with ancillary “family entertainment”.

As per Gambling Insider, denying the permission, Dublin City Council stated: “There are serious concerns that permitting a casino at this location would be setting a precedent for such a non-retail use within Category 1-designated streets, the primary shopping streets in the city centre.”

Hammerson and Irish Life also unsuccessfully appealed the City Council’s verdict, where the appeal board did not find the mall’s venue suitable for a casino.
