Recently, Tamil Nadu banned online gambling in the state by promulgating an ordinance.

The Governor of Tamil Nadu, Mr. Banwarilal Purohit, promulgated the ordinance last week where penal provisions have been prescribed for the offenders.

Upto 2 years of imprisonment has been prescribed for gambling operators and upto 6 months os jail term has been prescribed for gamblers indulging in the activity.

A division bench of justices N Kirubakaran and B Pugalendhi of Madras High Court were hearing the petition filed by an advocate S Muthukumar seeking ban on online gambling games such as Rummy and Poker.

It was submitted by additional advocate general M Sricharan Rangarajan that the state has banned online gambling. On this submission, the hon’ble bench lauded the govt. for its decision to ban online gambling.
