Mira Bhayandar-Vasai Virar Commissionerate (MVCC) police arrested two bookies for allegedly being involved in an online betting racket for IPL 2020 matches. Bhayandar is part of Mumbai metropolitan area.

The bookies, as reported by Hindustan Times are Vijay Tiwari and Rakesh Sharma were arrested from a shop in Sai Baba Nagar. The accused were reportedly placing and accepting bets via websites and applications.

Inspector Sampatrao Patil of Navghar police stated that, “acting on a tip-off, we raided a shop in Sai Baba Nagar area in Bhayandar (East) and found that the accused had been accepting bets for the cricket match in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL)” reported Hindustan Times.

Inspector Patil further added that, “We have seized four smartphones and scores of SIM cards from them. The duo has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1985 and Maharashtra Prevention of Gambling Act, 1987”.

Police is investigating the matter further and is also looking for other suspects.
