The minimum age to play the lottery in the United Kingdom (UK) has been increased from 16 years of age to 18 years. The decision was made effective from April 22, 2021.

The said decision was taken by the National Lottery whose operator is Camelot Group. Camelot Group had earlier in December 2020, while review of 2005 Gambling Act was going on, had expressed its intention to do so.

In a statement it had said that it was necessary to raise the legal age to play the lottery. The said is to apply to all sales channels, including in-person retail, online games, and through the app.

As per Gambling Insider, Camelot spokesperson said: “We’ve said all along that we would fully support any decision made by the government to raise the minimum age to play. We’ll be doing everything we can to implement all of the changes that will be necessary as quickly as possible, while ensuring that we maintain the very high standards demanded of The National Lottery.”
