Police arrested two people from Tony Homeland Heights in Sector 70, a plush society in Mohali on Saturday evening for running a betting racket and dealing in drugs.

The alleged accused persons are reported to have organized betting racket in 35 IPL cricket matches so far.

While those arrested were identified as Vipin of Patel Nagar in Hisar and Rakesh Manchanda from Faridabad, two other accused persons managed to escape. They were identified as Tarush Dhawan of Kaithal and Malkit Singh of Kila Lal village in Gurdaspur district, reported Hindustan Times (October 11, 2020).

The police recovered 570 gram heroin, 15 mobile phones and laptops from the possession of the alleged accused persons.

Harwinder Singh Virk, Superintendent of Police (City), addressed the media and stated that, “the suspects were also involved in large scale drug smuggling”, reported HT.

The police also stated that the accused used to stake around 4-5 Lakhs on a single IPL match and the transaction was done using Google Pay and Paytm.

A case under Sections 420 of the Indian Penal Code, 13, 3/67 of the Gambling Act and 21, 29-61-85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act was registered against the suspects at the Mataur police station, reported HT.
