The Spain government has decided to impose ban on online advertisements of gambling companies by the sports clubs.

It was announced on September 11, 2020 that the government is moving to prohibit the sports clubs from displaying logo or information of their sports betting counterparts in their online advertisements.

The gambling firm’s logo would not be allowed to appear in sports clubs’ assets in advertisements, specifically online ones.

These changes have to be implemented from October 2020 onwards and the remaining time is transition period. No further grace period would be provided to sports clubs to accommodate these changes.

The signs, languages etc. of gambling firms depicting their identity in any form shall be removed from online media, digital media, campaign and advertisements. Some of the major sports betting websites in Spain include the likes of Pinnacle Sports, Betfair, Bet365, Bwin, 888sports, William Hill, Suertia, Betsson & Leovegas.

All of these changes are proposed under the Royal Decree which was introduced back in April with the Spanish government submitting an action plan to the European Commission for approval.

According to experts, these hostile regulations are likely to affect existing sponsorship deals between gambling companies and sports clubs. Many of the existing deals have already begun negotiation processes, while others continue to remain unaffected by the new regulation.
