Krafton, which is the parent company of PUBG corporation which is the owner of popular battle royale title PUBG Mobile has announced a global partnership with Microsoft to ensure the safety and security of users’ data. A press note says that the South Korean company will be working with Microsoft-owned cloud computing service, Azure for hosting its portfolio of multi-platform products. the list of products which will be available at Azure includes PUBG for PC and consoles and PUBG Mobile app which was banned in India on September 2020 over security concerns. The press note has not revealed full details about the possible return of PUBG Mobile to India that had around 50 million monthly active users in the country before the ban.

Krafton says that the collaboration with Microsoft would ensure that privacy rights are respected in full compliance with the applicable laws and regulations. Tencent Cloud that published PUBG Mobile and PUBG Mobile Lite apps in India stated last month that they are terminating access for users in the country in compliance with the order from Indian government. Tencent also claimed in a Facebook post that the rights to publish PUBG Mobile in India will be returned to the owner of “PUBG intellectual property”, which is PUBG Corporation – a subsidiary of Krafton. The post also stated that protection of users data has always been their top priority.

A week after the announcement by Tencent, a report by TechCrunch indicated that PUBG Mobile is planning to make its return to India before the end of 2020. A report from the sources familiar with the matter said that PUBG Corp has engaged with global cloud service providers in the last few weeks to store the data of Indian users within the country to allay the concerns of Indian government about the privacy and security of user data. TechCrunch report also highlighted that PUBG Corp has privately informed a few high-profile streamers in India that they expect to resume their service very soon. At present, the company is yet to officially provide the details about their return. PUBG Mobile with PUBG Mobile Lite app and 116-China origin apps were banned under Section 69A of Information Technology Act which aims to protect the “sovereignty and integrity” of India from foreign IT players.
