No parent loves anyone more than his/her child, but what if the latter is born with a life-threatening disease? Well, such was the case of Bobby’s child. A resident of Tundla, she gave birth to her child in the local Railway Healthcare. A few minutes after the delivery, the doctors informed the family about a heavy swelling (cyst) on the child’s lower back. Due to the complication and possible impact, the family members immediately admitted the child to Nayati Medicity, Mathura.

Dr Ravindra Srivastava and Dr Vimal Kumar, two Senior Neurosurgeons at Nayati Medicity, Mathura were put in charge of the case. Initial diagnosis required the doctors to conduct an Ultrasound and MRI scan. But, a major hurdle posed in the way as the child could be put under the effect of anesthesia only once.

However, the doctors were successfully able to perform the tests, which proved to be a crucial breakthrough in the case. According to the MRI Scan, the veins that connect to the brain were knotted along with fluid in the knots as well as the brain.

After observing the MRI scan, Dr Neelesh Gupta, Neurologist at Nayati Medicity said that the child suffered from Neural Tube Defect. Inadequate levels of Folic Acids, a derivative of Vitamin B, is the primary cause of the condition. While adequate doses of Folic Acids are administered to pregnant women before or during pregnancy, it is speculated that the mother’s lack of awareness and doctor supervision at regular intervals could be responsible for the child’s condition.

Under the supervision of Nayati Healthcare’s Neurology Consultants, the team of qualified doctors led by Dr Ravindra Srivastava and Dr Vimal Kumar inserted a VP (VentriculoPeritoneal) Shunt from the child’s head to stomach, so as to drain the fluid in the brain. Following this, a successful operation was performed on the vein knots. The availability of appropriate machines, swift action, and expert precision by doctors at Nayati Medicity worked in perfect sync to save the life of the 2-day old baby.

As a result, the child was discharged after 48 hours of observation in the Neonatal ICU. In addition, the surgery marks the successful neurosurgery on patients with age group ranging from two days to 96 years, by Nayati Medicity.
