Oxford University Press has recently published a new study which has suggested a potential and effective treatment strategy for patients suffering from prion disease.

The findings of the new study have been published in the Nucleic Acids Research journal. Prion disease is a rare and deadly neurodegenerative disease which at present is untreatable. The disease causes rapid neurodegeneration.

On average, about 300 prion diseases cases per year are reported in the United States.

The most common form of prion disease found in humans is Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Bovine spongiform encephalopathy which is popularly known as Mad Cow Disease, is another prion disease.

Disrupting the structure of a normal human prion protein leads to the formulation of toxic clumps in the brain which causes the Prion disease.
