According to a recent study, antibodies or immunity against coronavirus stays for at least two months in the body of the recovered patient of coronavirus infection. The study is based on a 5 month long sero survey result that was conducted at a leading city hospital jointly by Max Hospital and Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, under the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

According to the survey, a person developing 2 months or 60 days of immunity against the virus after recovery depends upon the time the individual contracted the virus.

IGIB scientist Shantanu Sengupta said, “The participants of the sero survey, jointly done by the Max Hospital and Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, under the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), will again be tested to assess how long the antibodies last in the person who contracted COVID-19”.

The survey used the samples of 780 participants which consisted of hospital staff members and people who had visited the hospital after the pandemic outbreak. The study findings will be beneficial in understanding the recovery of Covid-19 patients and the pattern of re-infection in them which may prevent the pandemic from worsening.

Mr Sengupta said, “Our study results confirm that anti SARS-CoV-2 antibodies could remain for more than 60 days in the body. This is a step forward towards better understanding of the infection recovery and re-infection pattern. There is a need for larger follow-up studies to further assess how long the antibodies remain stabilised in the body”.

Sujeet Jha of Max Super Speciality Hospital said, “This study, being a longitudinal study, would help us to understand if asymptomatic or symptomatic seropositive individuals are protected for COVID-19 and if yes, for how long.”
