Use of technology in Cardiac Surgery

Heart surgery is one of the toughest and most important surgeries to make. Doctors across India, adopt various procedures for this. However, the process of heart surgeries hasn’t seen much of any innovation in recent times and same techniques are used even today which were being used several years ago.

Dr. Zainulabedin Hamdulay, a cardiac surgeon in Mumbai, India, is all set to revolutionize the way cardiac surgery is carried out by doctors. With the use of technology, he is trying to make the process easier and quicker.

Dr. Hamdulay is a successful doctor who has attended more than 7000 cardiac surgeries till date. He has trained in various hospitals throughout the world and has also been a part of a heart transplant in 2017.

What is he doing different?

Dr. Hamdulay is trying to bring forward, Minimal Invasive Cardiac Surgery(MICS-keyhole) into mainstream practice. He believes that this process is easier and also the recovery is quick on patients.

He also believes that once people start seeing this process’s results, more and more cardiac surgeons across India will start adopting it.

It’s known that till now the traditional way for heart surgery is the Open heart surgery. This requires doctors to operate on to the entire chest area.

In open heart surgery the doctors need to sawn off the breastbone in order to get to the heart. Here, the scars are deep and also, there is risk of extra blood loss.

How is Minimal Invasive Cardiac Surgery carried out?

As compared to the predominant way for surgery, MICS techniques requires a 4 cm incision to be done on the patient. Rather than opening chest from the middle, this process needs side of the chest to be opened.

Here, bones are not involved, hence bleeding and pain is reduces drastically. This further helps in reducing recovery time.

Once the process is done, patient can get back to their normal routine just in a matter of days.

Advantages of Minimal Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS)

One of the most important benefits that MICS offers is quick recovery. With the help of MICS, the patients can resume to their normal life quickly than traditional cardiac surgery.

Other benefits that MICS offers involve:

  • The incision made on patient is small as compared to open heart surgery. Therefore, it heals quicker.
  • Less hospital stay.
  • The pain and discomfort involved is comparatively less.
  • Good cosmetic results.
  • Less chances of infection.
