COVID-19 cases spikecredits: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare/ BBC

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India had recorded 1,274 newly diagnosed COVID-19 cases by 8 am Tuesday. The active cases comprised 0.03 per cent of the total infections, however, the recovery rate remained constant at 98.76 per cent.

Recently, the Delhi government sent samples from across the National Capital Region (NCR) for genome sequencing to verify that the newly discovered variant is what’s causing the surge. The report is expected in a week, according to government sources.

“An extensive search of the scientific database so far has not revealed any reports of primary infection, followed by a breakthrough infection and reinfection in India. So, the healthcare worker is, presumably, the first such case in the country,” an ICMR scientist said.

DELHI

On Tuesday, Delhi has recorded 632 fresh COVID-19 cases with a bare marginal drop in the positivity rate, as compared to Monday’s 7.72 per cent to 4.42 per cent. Unlike the previous waves, this time, especially in Delhi NCR, the number of children getting infected is much higher. This is presumably because most of the children in India are still unvaccinated.

Additionally, the center asked Delhi, Haryana, Mizoram, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra to monitor clusters, intensify genome sequencing, and stay vigilant regarding the pandemic situation.

In the letters sent to these states, Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan has suggested “monitoring influenza-like illnesses on a regular basis for detecting early warning signals of the spread of infection.” Reiterating the need to implement the five-fold strategy.

MAHARASHTRA

Maharashtra, on Tuesday, reported 137 fresh COVID-19 cases and three deaths. Mumbai alone has recorded 85 out of 137 cases. The three deaths comprised two in Pune and one in Parbhani.

UTTAR PRADESH

In Uttar Pradesh, Gautam Buddh Nagar reported 107 fresh COVID-19 cases, out of which 33 were children, on Tuesday. Therefore, the total number of active COVID-19 cases has reached 411 in Gautam Buddh Nagar.
