Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announces establishment of 157 New Nursing Colleges

The Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the establishment of 157 new nursing colleges in conjunction with the 157 medical colleges already in place, built since 2014. This announcement is in keeping with the goals of India@100 and Amrit Kaal. This was said by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday during her presentation of the Union Budget for 2023–2024 to the Parliament.

In the 75th year of India’s Independence, the World has recognized the Indian Economy as a ‘bright star’ as the Economic Growth is estimated at 7 per cent, which is the highest among all major economies, in spite of the massive global slowdown caused by COVID-19 and Russia-Ukraine War. She stressed that the Indian economy is on the right track, and despite a time of challenges, heading towards a bright future. Union Minister Sitharaman outlined a plan to create a wealthy and inclusive India where the benefits of development reach all areas and people, particularly our youth, women, farmers, OBCs, Scheduled Castes, and Scheduled Tribes.

Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission

The Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission, which Nirmala Sitharaman also launched, will involve raising awareness, universal screening of 7 crore people in the 0–40 age range in afflicted tribal areas, and counselling through joint efforts of central ministries and state governments.

ICMR Labs available for Research and Development

The Finance Minister announced that facilities in a few Indian Council of Medical Research Labs will be made available to public and private medical colleges to encourage research in the medical field and innovation.

Research and Innovation in Pharma Sector

The finance minister unveiled a new initiative to support pharmaceutical research and innovation through centres of excellence. “We shall also encourage industry to invest in research and development in specific priority areas”, she added.

Dedicated multidisciplinary courses for medical devices

In order to ensure the availability of skilled labour for cutting-edge manufacturing, high-end manufacturing, and research, Sitharaman highlighted the significance of futuristic medical technologies and high-end manufacturing in the medical industry and announced that specific multidisciplinary courses for medical devices will be supported in current institutions.
