India approves the use of two COVID- 19 vaccines for children under 12

India recorded around 2,483 newly reported COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours (ending 8am Tuesday) – marginally lower than the previous day’s 2,541 cases.

On Tuesday, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) approved emergency use authorization for Covaxin made by Bharat Biotech, for the age group of 6-12 years and Corbevax for the age group of 5-12 years. In the meantime, Zydus Cadila’s two doses of COVID- 19 vaccine have been approved for those 12 and older.

What do we know Vaccination drives?

In India, around 86% of the adult population who are eligible for vaccination has been fully vaccinated, while most of the others have had at least one dose so far.

From January onwards, India has also been conducting booster shots drives for healthcare and frontline workers as well as those over 60 years of age.

So far, India has been using 4 vaccines – Covishield, Covaxin, Sputnik V, and Cobevax , for its drives. Out of these, according to the tally, Covishield accounts for around 81 percent of the doses given so far.

Current scenario

On 27th of April, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with chief ministers on the emerging COVID – 19 situations in the country. “PM Modi will interact with CMs on the COVID-related situation in the country through video conferencing tomorrow at 12 noon,” the official said.
