With a recent uptick in COVID-19 cases and the arrival of the JN.1 variant, the Indian government has called for heightened vigilance, urging states to maintain a “constant vigil” over the situation. The Union Health Secretary, Sudhansh Pant, sent a letter to states and union territories outlining critical control and management strategies to tackle the potential resurgence.
While acknowledging “consistent and collaborative actions” between central and state governments in keeping case rates low, the letter emphasizes the need for sustained efforts. The upcoming festive season, known for gatherings and travel, adds another layer of concern. To mitigate this risk, states are advised to implement public health measures and encourage mask-wearing and respiratory hygiene practices.
The revised surveillance strategy for COVID-19 takes center stage in the plan. States are urged to ensure its effective implementation, closely monitoring and reporting Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases across all health facilities, including on the Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP) portal. This early detection system will flag potential case surges before they become major outbreaks.
Adequate testing remains crucial, with the letter stressing the need to maintain recommended testing protocols in all districts, balancing RT-PCR and antigen tests. Importantly, states are encouraged to increase RT-PCR testing and send positive samples for genome sequencing to track the emergence of new variants like JN.1. This proactive approach enables faster identification and response to evolving strains.
Preparing for the potential challenge is also key. The Union Health Ministry’s upcoming drill will assess the preparedness and response capacity of public and private health facilities across states. Active participation is encouraged to ensure a coordinated and effective response should a significant case increase occur.
Finally, the letter highlights the importance of community awareness. Public support and adherence to preventive measures, including hand washing and mask-wearing, are crucial in effectively managing the pandemic. By promoting community engagement and building on the foundations of past successes, India aims to navigate this new phase of the virus with continued vigilance and proactive measures.
