Facebook has been planning to launch a new service called LOL which would have served as a hub for videos and GIFs. The social media platform has been planning LOL as a meme hub to lure in teenagers in order to alleviate its depleting young users. Now, a report has confirmed that the social media giant has dropped that plan of launching LOL.

The LOL project, that the company was experimenting with a small percentage of users, could not last long. Facebook had around 100 high-school students, who signed non-disclosure agreements with consents from their parents, to participate in the meme app. The company has also established a young team of more than 100 employees to build features for teens. Moreover, Facebook will now work its Messenger Kids app, that the company developed for kids under 13 years of age, according to a report by Recode.

“The youth team has restructured in order to match top business priorities, including increasing our investment in Messenger Kids,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement.

Facebook launched its Messenger Kids app back in December 2017. The Messenger Kids is basically an app that lets kids chat with their parent-approved friends. However, some advocates have also warned that this app could contribute to unhealthy sleep habits and lower self-esteem.

LOL would not be the first feature from Facebook that the company planned to launch for teenagers but it ended up failing. Facebook had launched IGTV, an expanded video service for Facebook-owned photo-sharing app Instagram. There was Facebook Watch that was supposed to bring curated shows and programmes to the feed, and lastly, there was Lasso which could be considered a counterpart of TikTok. All of these features were launched last year.
