Google Chrome

Google Chrome browser is expected to receive a major update on Windows 10 and macOS. The update is reported to bring native dark mode on the Chrome browser on desktop platforms and macOS platforms. Chrome browser could be the first to get this feature as a stable update.

Dark theme is already a popular feature in the tech market and its application has been growing exponentially to various platforms. Various social media apps like Twitter and Reddit have their own integration of the dark mode and there are reports about the next version of Android and iOS featuring a system-wide dark mode.

Dark mode renders black colored aesthetics to the default page for new tabs, menus, interaction bars, and even background. Google is expected to bring the feature with the launch of Chrome 74 which is scheduled to launch in April, according to The Verge. The reason for implementing this feature is to improve the visibility in low light-mode so screen resolution is not very tough on the user’s eyes, and also to optimize the autonomy of the device.

Google has already implemented the dark mode in the beta version of the Canary version of Google Chrome. The Canary version of the browser is designed for web developers to help them test new implementations and add them to their web pages. Since it is a separate app, users can download it without having to worry about the normal use of Chrome.

Once the browser is downloaded and installed, users can turn on the dark mode by simply switching between dark and light mode in Windows 10 or macOS Mojave. The browser will automatically detect the activated mode and use it.

To force the use of dark mode permanently user must follow a series of steps:

In macOS, execute the following command in the app: / Applications / Google \ Chrome \ Canary.app/Contents/MacOS/Google \ Chrome \ Canary –force-dark-mode

– In Windows, open the properties of the Chrome Canary app and in ‘Shortcut’> ‘Destination:’ add –force-dark-mode to the end of the existing command.

Since it is a beta version, users must be aware that it comes with some flaws including Many buttons not having an adequate color scheme to differentiate if they are active and some texts not being visible because they do not contrast correctly with the dark background.
