WordPress is launching its own new product P2.
Automattic, WordPress’s parent company has been using P2 for years to communicate asynchronously. It’s a place to share long-form posts, a repository to keep onboarding documents, and other important evergreen documents.
With so many people working from home in this pandemic situation, Automattic finds this as a perfect opportunity to grow and a tool like P2 would be of great use.
What is P2?
Well in simple terms P2 is a collaboration tool. It helps teams to work in sync and stay updated with each other. It can be a great companion for small or mid-size companies. P2 focuses on communication that is asynchronous and easily accessible across time zones.
Teams working on any type of project together can write and post regular updates using P2. Through comments on posts, teams can reach a consensus and decided together what needs to be done next. P2 can also be used to share photos, videos, GIFS, and charts or to take polls and share quotes and summaries from the day’s work. You can also create checklists, embed PDF documents, stick important posts at the top of the homepage. You can’t do real-time chatting on P2.
Many companies rely on Google Docs and shared folders in Google Drive for this kind of document. P2 could potentially replace those shared folders and become the main information repository.
P2 sites are private. You can make them public if you want to show it to your client or something. WordPress already has a theme called P2
But this new P2 is way more advanced. It is free for now. You can create and invite people and make a team. Soon they will make a paid plan for this too by adding some advanced features if you spill out the cash.
Given the current situation, a feature like this will help a lot to the small or mid-scale teams who are finding difficulties in collaborating with each other. A smart move by Automattic.
