Mission LiFE is a dedicated, mission mode and India-led global movement: NITI Aayog CEO Parameswaran Iyer

NITI Aayog’s CEO Parameswaran Iyer on Tuesday said at 1st Development Working Group meeting that Mission LiFE is a dedicated, mission mode and India-led global movement that aims to bring individual and community behaviour at centre of climate action. 

India’s G20 Presidency and Secretariat & Ministry of External Affairs, in collaboration with the Council on Energy, Environment and Water, UNEP, UNIDO & 10YFP, are hosted the Development Working Group’s side event ‘Infusing New LiFE into Green Development’ in Mumbai.

Iyer said, India is nudging individuals, communities, and institutions to practice simple climate-friendly actions in their daily life. These 75 actions are categorized under Energy saved, Water saved, Single-use plastic reduced, sustainable food system adopted, waste reduced, healthy lifestyle adopted and E-waste reduced, he added. 

He said that these actions are easy to practice by individuals and likely to promote economic activity. India aims to mobilize one billion people to take individual and collective action against climate change through 2022-28, he added.

The CEO stated that Mission LiFE is endorsed by 10 countries including the United Kingdom, France, etc. India has also proposed UN international LiFE Day, he added.

India’s G20 sherpa Amitabh Kant said that Mission LiFE has a lot to do with nudging behaviour. It is not countries that will make the change, it is individual and collective behaviour that will make the difference. He said, “LiFE is critical because a country like India will see urbanisation in a very rapid pace.”

Kant clarified that LiFE is not about anti-consumerism. It is a completely new model of development which involves a behavioral change to new areas of growth, he added. 

He said that The challenge for India and other developing countries is to follow a growth model that is different from developed nations like America. He expected that a Completely new model of growth or development would have to come from emerging nations in terms of transportation, urbanization, plastics.
