The Auto Raid in Bangalore was a sting operation, planned and well executed by Bangalore police. There were 750 undercover cops, including 100 women, and the 15 hours sting operation on 30th June, 2014, was an eye opener for the entire Nation. The cops masked as Hindi, English and Kannada speaking commuters and tested various autos and autowalas. The results were such that 3350 autos were fined and 450 autos were seized for behaving rudely, not having proper documents, refusing hire, overcharging, reckless driving and not wearing uniform.

This incident went viral on Social Media and it has threatened the autowalas of other cities as well. The metro cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai are also planning for an auto raid, which will help them in eradicating this issue regionally. The citizens have been a silent victim of these regular tortures and couldn’t roar about it. They tolerated and later ignored it. But how long is the question?

Kiran Leo Miranda who is an auto driver from last 15 years, couldn’t take it more. His self respect forced him to bring a change in the society. He framed 10 commandments for the auto drivers which must be adhered to. He not only printed it but also circulated it to the fellow autowalas and requested them to ponder about it. The following are the 10 commandments – an initiative by Bangalore Autowala:

  • Say no to drink and drive
  • No overcharging. Pay as per the meter
  • Be alert all the times
  • Drive carefully and safely
  • Secure ride to all the customers
  • Keep the autos clean and tidy
  • Self groomed
  • A strict ban on smoking, ghutka and chewing pan inside the auto
  • Night fare charges as per meter only.
  • Driving within speed limit

Wow, isn’t this a great initiative, to bring a change in the society. Such efforts must be appreciated and encouraged, so that more and more people come forward to make this planet a beautiful place to live in and cherish the memories.
