Google Wallet

Google combined Android Pay and Google Wallet back in January of this year to create Google Pay. While Google Wallet was used for storing funds, Android Pay was used as a mobile payment application. Since the two apps functioned on basically the same premise, the amalgamation of the applications makes sense. This resulted in both Android Pay and Google Wallet becoming defunct, though not many people are aware of this. The fact that not many people know that Google Wallet is dead and gone enables scammers to try and resurrect the app for nefarious reasons. Several users have reported that they received emails saying that Google Wallet was granted access to their Google accounts.

The details regarding the Google Wallet, a dead app, access to Google accounts suggests that the account has been compromised. With an unrecognized developer with the app that is from an unverified developer hints at trouble, especially since the original app has been dead for quite some time now. Google has confirmed that they are investigating the problem through their issue tracker. Users who have ended up granting the app access to their Google accounts can head here to revoke the permission. The app poses a serious danger to the privacy and security of users since it has access to both the Google Pay Sandbox and Google Payments, which means it can be used to send money from the given account to another.

Users who would like to track the activity on their accounts can head to Google’s account activity. It will show users all the activities that have been pulled out using the Google account, including payments that may have been sent by the fraudulent Google Wallet app. So far, no user has reported on payments getting sent, nevertheless, given the wide reach of the app, it is only a matter of time before such reports start to pop up. Users would be expected to confirm their CVV before any transaction is made, however, given the wide reach of the app and the fact that it granted itself access to Google accounts, has users worried about the potential of the app. Meanwhile, We’ll be keeping a close eye on Google’s updated response on their issue tracker.
