Spotify

Spotify is a widely renowned music streaming app because of its massive music collection and impressive track recommendations. Add that to its feature-rich UI and the support for integration across almost all devices, Spotify becomes one of the most preferred music services. Now, Spotify is getting a few new features that are expected to enhance user experience with the app as well as provide users with more direct ways to connect with friends over music.

Jane Manchun Wong, the engineer who is responsible for leaking Facebook‘s dating feature, tweeted some of the features that she discovered in the Spotify Android code. Firstly, Spotify is testing a Sleep Timer, which will automatically turn off the music after a certain amount of time has passed. This feature will prove to be useful for users who like to fall asleep listening to music. As the screenshots suggest, the new feature will allow users to set Sleep Timer to 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 1 hour, or the end of the specific song playing at that time. According to Wong, this feature will be available in the Settings for Songs.

The next feature discovered by Wong will let users share music with their friends by scanning soundwave-shaped barcodes. The feature is called  “Connect with friends” and can be accessed through “Connect to a device” interface. Users will need to scan a code or allow their friends to scan their code in order to connect with them. Connecting with friends will allow users to add tracks from their friends’ playlist or vice versa.

The third feature that could come to Spotify will determine how users interact with their music while navigating their way. Spotify currently has the support for Waze and with the next update, the app is expected to come with support for Google Maps. The feature will show as “smart commute updates” within the Spotify app as well as show Spotify navigation controls within Google Maps and will help in avoiding app switches. The feature should also allow users to navigate and control music playback simultaneously without getting too occupied with in-app switching while they are driving or walking.

The leaks by Wong are based on reverse engineering of the Spotify app, which means these features were found hidden under the app’s code. It also means that the company is testing these features and there are chances that these features might not see the light of the day.
