TikTok the lip-sync apps owned by ByteDance revealed the transparency report for 2019. The report had the list of countries that requested the company to take down any account or content. The company wrote in the report “Just like other tech companies, occasionally we are presented with requests from various official bodies, such as government agencies or law enforcement officials, asking us to take certain actions at their behest.”

The report then said “These include requests to take down content deemed to be in violation of local laws or to provide information related to accounts under certain defined circumstances, such as to assist in a criminal investigation or emergency request. We also receive content take-down requests from copyright owners looking to protect their intellectual property.”

Tiktok mentioned three types of requests in the report:

Legal requests for user information

The list had 28 countries that asked for the user information to gather evidence in connection with a law enforcement investigation or to investigate an emergency involving imminent harm. India had the most number of requests in the list. India had 99 Legal requests and 8 emergency requests for a total of 143 specified accounts. The USA and Japan came second and third with a total of 79 and 35 requests respectively.

Government requests for content removal

Government bodies sometimes requested to remove content they deem to be a violation of local laws. Again India was on the top of this list with a total of 11 requests. The company, though, removed only 4 contents from the app.

Under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), the company sent copyrighted takedown notices to 3345 account and then they removed 85% of the content that was requested to remove under the act.

While there were many big countries on the list, there was no sign of China, the home country of TikTok.
