The Delhi High Court on Wednesday adjourned the hearing on a plea filed by Yashpal Singh till January 29. Singh in his plea sought the bail and suspension of the death sentence given to him in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

A Delhi court on November 20, had ordered death penalty to the convict Yashpal Singh and ordered life imprisonment to another, Naresh Sherawat, for the killing of two persons in Delhi’s Mahipalpur area during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Both were also fined Rs 35 lakh each.

Both the accused were booked under Sections 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint), 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous  weapons or means), 395 (punishment for dacoity)
and 436 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy) – of the Indian Penal Code.

The Delhi Police had closed this case in 1994 for citing lack of evidence. But Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) reopened the case in 2015.

Earlier this week on Monday, While reversing the acquittal of a trial court, The Delhi High Court on convicted Congress Leader and Former MP Sajjan Kumar and sentence him life imprisonment in connection to 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Sajjan Kumar has been asked by the Court to Surrender before December 31.

Besides Congress‘ Sajjan Kumar, Captain Bhagmal, Girdhari Lal and former Congress councilor Balwan Khokhar have been sentenced to life imprisonment. Delhi High Court on Monday also extends the life imprisonment of other two convicts, Kishan Khokkar and former legislator Mahendra Yadav from 3 years to 10 years.

As per the official records, more than 2700 Sikhs were killed across the nation after the Assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
