Adhaar-linked issues are finally decided by the constitutional bench.

The court has observed that no interregnum orders could be passed merely based on the angst raised by the petitioners, Attorney General KK Venugopal and senior advocate Shyam Divan.

Earlier three different petitions were filed against government’s notification of making Adhaar Card mandatory for availing the benefits of their welfare schemes. Now the apex court has asked the government not to solicit the Adhaar Card from the citizen voluntarily for extending the benefits of welfare schemes which includes LPG subsidy, Jan Dhan, and Public Distribution system.

This matter was taken up by the apex court during the vacations but refused to pass an interim order against the Centre’s notification of making Aadhaar mandatory.

A larger constitutional bench was set up to give the final verdict on this matter. Earlier a three-judge bench was set up to deal with this matter but Justice J Chelameswar, AM Khanwilkar, and Navin Sinha urged Chief Justice to set up a five-judge bench for this matter.
