The Airports Authority of India in association with other organizations provided food to stranded passengers at Guwahati Railway Station on Sunday.

Tents were set up at the Guwahati airport and food was brought in from nearby hotels to ensure that there was sufficient supply of food and water. The airport authority even opened their guest houses to accommodate the stranded passengers.

Earlier, flights to the Northeast were disrupted amid violent protests over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, forcing the Dibrugarh airport in Assam to shut down till at least Saturday.

From December 11, mobile internet and data services were shut down in the northeast state and will remain suspended in the state till December 16. As per the government, this move aims to prevent misuse of internet platforms and social media to disturb the peace and order in Assam.

The Citizenship Amendment bill has been passed in both the houses (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha) in the parliament and became a law after getting a nod from the President.

The Bill seeks to declare Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, Buddhists, Zorastrian, Parsis, and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan eligible for citizenship who came to India before December 31, 2014. Although the Bill only carries the provision of citizenship for the non-muslim population that arrived from the neighboring nations.

The bill is being vehemently opposed by various political outfits and student organizations in North-eastern states.
