Due to the ongoing trade war between the United States and China, it is pushing China to buy raw sugar from its neighboring country India. China’s refiners are considering India, from which they can purchase Indian raw sugar, including meeting mill officials next month giving a delegation visit to South Asian nation.

Vice chairmen of China Sugar Association Liu Hande said China would purchase Indian raw sugar “if prices are good enough”.

Amid tariff war, the China is being pressurized develop sweeten ties with India and other nations too. This tie is expected to boost domestic stockpiles.

India’s Ministry of Commerce that said after China’s agreement on importing non-basmati rice to India, the raw sugar export to China from India would be counted as the second agricultural commodity agreement.

A fund manager with Shanghai Buyun Investment Co., Zhan Xiao said, “China needs to show its open attitude to trading partners, and is likely to purchase a symbolic amount in a show of good will give its trade spat with the US.”

Zhan said the volume would not touch Indian’s expectation but would be estimated as high as 7 million tons. As it is looking to reduce inventories not increasing them, there are some chances that China government may not purchase Indian raw sugar as stockpiles “are still quite high”, China Sugar Association’s Liu said after agreeing.

China Sugar Association’s Liu said, “We don’t know how much import quota would be issued, or whether China and India would sign any agreement regarding low tariffs on imports.”

The Commerce ministry said that from the starting 2019, India is planning to export 2 million of raw sugar to China.
