water shortage india

Water levels in Bengaluru has been a matter of concern for quite a while now. However, if the latest reports are to believed, then Bengaluru is going to face acute water shortage this summer. In a report by Times of India, which comes less than a fortnight after the congress led government of Karnataka had promised uninterrupted water supply despite low water levels in reservoirs.

Water supplying offices are already receiving a lot of complaints of reduced water supply, low pressure in the lines and contaminated water coming from the taps.

According to a member of Hebbal Residents’ Welfare Association, the residents used to get water in line for 3 hours in the morning and that has been reduced to 2 hours lately. Also, the pressure in the line is not as much as it used to be. Adding to that, the water is at times, contaminated and not safe to be used directly. As a result, the households which are situated at the end of pipelines, are not able to draw any water.

Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board’s chairman Tushar Girinath however had a different view on the same. According to him, a lot of households who have borewells have started to depend on the Cauvery water because a lot of borewells are failing due to increased temperature and low water level. He added that 1300-1350 million liters of water is being pumped out everyday in the months of February and March. There is however a difference in some areas, he admitted. Because of increased supply from areas which heavily depended on borewells, that has made the board cut down water supply a bit from the areas where it supplied more water than required.

A senior official of the water board, however admitted that the conditions might worsen in the coming days as temperature is going to touch an all time high and water levels in the reservoirs isn’t motivating. Water tankers are becoming expensive day by day and the problem is made worse by the leaking pipelines and ever increasing dependency on Cauvery water.

People in Bangalore, what are your thoughts? Are you facing issues receiving water? Do let us know in the comment section.
