Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar held a meeting on Monday with the officials of the state administration to observe the issue of water-logging in Patna. In the meeting, Nitish Kumar also suspended officials for the ineffective discharge of their duties.

It has also been reported that the salaries of a few officers were also withheld. Some of the officials were also issued show-cause notices for their alleged dismal performance. The meeting also saw the participation of top-level state officers and cabinet members.

It was found in the meeting that the many pumps were not functioning at all. Drains were found to be jammed with garbage preventing the seamless flow of water.

Giving detailed reports about the meeting, Chief Secretary Deepak Kumar apprised the media that some of the officials of Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (BUIDCO) and Patna Municipal Corporation were held accountable for their duties.

Speaking to the reporters of NDTV, he said, “The chief minister also laid stress on speedy removal of encroachments over the drains and the cleansing of these for the free discharge of wastewater. New drainage pumping systems will be installed at 14 places across the city. The chief minister also said the committee shall identify any other officials whose lapse might have been responsible for the recent flooding of the city. The government would take action against them.”

Deepak Kumar also said that a committee has also been set up to prevent the repeated instances of water-logging issue. The proposed committee comprises four members which include the state’s development commissioner and principal secretaries of various departments.

Giving in more detail about the meeting, the Chief Secretary told that one BUIDCO executive engineer has been transferred, while all sanitary inspectors of Bankipur have been suspended. He also said that the officials of Kankarbagh have also been imposed with severe penalties for non-diligence in their work.
