Indian Army Chief Bipin Rawat strongly denounced the report from the UN that called for an international investigation into the alleged incidents of human rights abuse by Indian forces in Kashmir, saying such reports are “motivated” and “misleading”

“I don’t think we should get too concerned with these reports. Some of these reports by the human rights organization are motivated,” General Rawat said

His trust in the Indian army was also very persistent and established his faith by saying,

“I don’t think we need to speak about the human rights record of the Indian Army. It is well known to the people of Kashmir and the international community.”

Previously the UN has released its first of a kind report, highlighting the severe violation of human rights at the Indo-Pak border in the Kashmir region. The report claimed that around 145 civilians were killed by the national security forces while the number killed by armed groups was around 20, a staggering contrast.

The two prominent national parties Congress and the BJP have jointly attacked the report by calling it “fallacious, tendentious and motivated”.

“I don’t need to speak about the human rights record of the Indian Army. It is well known to all of you, it is well known to the people of Kashmir, and to the international community. I don’t think we should get too concerned about the report, some of these reports are motivated,” General Rawat said.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein called for maximum restraint and denounced the lack of prosecutions of Indian forces in Jammu and Kashmir due to a 1990 law giving them what he called “virtual immunity”.

On the other hand Pakistan has accepted the report and also agreed to the UN’s proposal of making a Commission of Inquiry for an international investigation into the alleged human rights violations in Kashmir and PoK.

New Delhi had also lodged a strong protest with the United Nations, saying the government is “deeply concerned that individual prejudices are being allowed to undermine the credibility of a UN institution.”
