Sticking to their threat of calling for strikes against the newly-elected CongressJD(S) government if it fails to waive loans of farmers, the Bharatiya Janata Party has announced Karnataka bandh in almost all parts of the state today.

BJP’s B.S. Yeddyurappa had said during his resignation speech before last week’s trust vote that his party will call for a state-wide bandh in case Kumaraswamy’s government does not announce a loan waiver within a week. BJP leaders had reiterated this threat when the Congress-JD(S) alliance won their trust vote on Thursday.

Chief Minister Kumaraswamy had reacted to the demand of loan waiver yesterday by stating that he does have pressure on him but he cannot do anything about it yet without consulting his coalition partners. He said he is at the mercy of Congress, and not of the 6.5 crore people of Karnataka, as he had failed to secure an independent government.

BJP’s call for Karnataka bandh is going to be implemented in all parts of the country, except in areas like capital Bengaluru owing to by-elections scheduled there today. Some districts in the southern part of Karnataka as well might not see much activity being disrupted, but several business owners will voluntarily participate in the bandh.
