After Congress announced farm loan waivers, right after the commencement of its reign in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, the Vijay Rupani-led BJP government in Gujarat has also stood up for an absolute waiver of Rs 650 crore in unpaid electricity bills.

This falls under a one-time settlement scheme of the state government and is likely to benefit 6.22 lakh people from the rural areas of Gujarat.

Gujarat Energy Minister Saurabh Patel told the media in the state capital of Gandhinagar that the scheme is aimed at benefiting those who were booked under electricity theft and later on lost their connection. It will also cover those whose connection was snapped for some other reason.

The people in the rural areas can restore their power connection be it agriculture, household or commercial, by paying an amount of Rs 500, irrespective of their outstanding amount(including both principal and interest).

He also told the reporters that the state government of Gujarat had snapped the power connection of over 6.20 lakh people for not paying the bills within the due date. As a result of this, the unpaid bills sum up to Rs 650 crore which will be absolutely waived off.

According to the press release by the Gujarat government, the scheme will be effective by the end of February next year.

Patel claimed that the scheme will benefit farmers, the poor and middle-class citizens of the rural parts of Gujarat.
