If reports to be believed, elections to the assembly elections of Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand, which were originally slated for the second half of 2019, is now might take place along with General elections of the Lok Sabha that are due for April-May 2019. State Polls in Maharastra and Haryana are slated for October while State Polls Jharkhand are scheduled for December later this year.

It may be noteworthy that all these three states — Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand – have Bhartiya Janta Party. The latest report suggests that ruling Bhartiya Janta Party may decide to go in for early dissolution of the Assemblies in these states and hold polls along with the General Elections in order to avoid anti-incumbency.

BJP wants to maximize the electoral gains in these three states. BJP Leadership believes that performance of the National Democratic Alliance-led government at the Centre led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi may help garner votes for the party in the state elections as well.

Originally, State Polls in —  Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim — are likely clubbed with the General elections. The Election Commission is also likely to hold polls for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly alongside the General Elections, as President’s Rule is in place in J&K currently.

According to the reports by IANS, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar is keen simultaneous polls in the wake of party’s victories in local body polls; while Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis may not be as keen but will go by the party high command’s decision if it takes the call for simultaneous polls.

However, on January 25, A report claimed that State Polls in Maharashtra are unlikely to be clubbed with Lok Sabha Polls 2019. Members of the Maharashtra unit of BJP had earlier raised concerns over the possibility of the elections being held together. Some lawmakers and party leaders had also held consultations with the central BJP leadership on the matter.

Members of the Maharashtra unit of the ruling party believed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah might be in the favour of Assembly and Lok Sabha elections being held simultaneously.

In Jharkhand, meanwhile, the BJP is reported to be in favour of early polls as the opposition alliance between the Congress, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (JVM) is taking shape.
