Lok Sabha Speaker and Bharatiya Janata Party Staunch Leader Sumitra Mahajan on Friday announced not to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha Polls 2019. Her decision to opt out of poll race came amidst dilemma within the party over fielding her.

Mahajan, an eight-time incumbent Member of Parliament from party’s stronghold Indore in a statement said that ‘why a candidate has not been declared yet from Indore’. She further added that there rumors that suggest that the party wants to file someone else from the seat.

‘I appeal to the party to declare Candidate from Indore Parliamentary Seat’ She added while claiming has freed her party from making its choice.

Mahajan, 75, in the statement also thanked the people of Indore and party workers for support and cooperation.

Outgoing Lok Sabha Speaker and Sumitra Mahajan had in 2014 General Elections defeated Congress‘ Satyanarayan Patel with over 4.50 Lakh votes. She has represented the Indore Lok Sabha Seat since 1989.

Prior to this, BJP Senior Leader and Member of Parliament from MP’s Vidisha Sushma Swaraj last year announced not to contest the Polls.

It is noteworthy that the Bhartiya Janta Party in a run-up to the general elections has not given tickets to MPs having 80+ years of age and that includes, Murli Manohar Joshi, BC Khanduri, Kariya Munda, Kalraj Mishra, Bijoya Chakravarty, and LK Advani.

Bharatiya Janata Party has so far released candidates on over 370 parliamentary seats.

General Elections are slated to begin from April 11 and would spread on Seven Phases starting from April 11 to May 19. Election Commission had on Sunday declared schedule for General Elections 2019.

Results for the crucial Lok Sabha Polls will be announced on May 23 four days after the 7th phase of voting.
