Indian defence scientists unlocked a major achievement yesterday when the successfully test tired BrahMos supersonic cruise missile for the second consecutive day with maximum locally manufactured components.

Officials of the ministry of defence said the missile was launched from a test firing range off Odisha’s coast in Balasore district and it achieved its mission objectives successfully by validating its life extension technologies using indigenous components.

Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman tweeted about the successful test by congratulating DRDO scientists for their achievement. She said this is the first time in India that life extension technologies using locally-made ‘Make in India’ components have been deployed, and this will help in saving replacement cost of missiles used by Indian armed forces.

BrahMos missiles have been developed as a joint-venture between India’s DRDO and Russia’s NPOM. It derives its name from rivers Brahmaputra in India and Moskva of Russia. With the ability to cross speeds of 3,500 km/h, it is said to be the fastest supersonic cruise missile in the world presently.
