UPBulandshahr violence: Mob of over 300 attacked the police; 2 killed including a cop

Violent protests erupted in UP’s Bulandshahr on Monday over alleged illegal “cow slaughter” in the area.  As a result, a mob of at least 300 people attacked the police force in the Bulandshahr incident that claimed the life of Uttar Pradesh Police Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh and 20-year-old Sumit.

Sub Inspector Suresh Kumar said,”The crowd jammed the road and started throwing stones at the police. There were around 300-500 people. The entire police force was attacked. I got hurt myself and after that, I do not know what happened.”

The villagers found the remains of cow and its young one in a jungle in Mahaw village. Aggravated villagers and members of various Hindu outfits brought the animal remains in tractor-trolley to the Chingarwathi Police Chowki and demanded action against the culprits. They raised slogans against the police administration and blocked the Bulandshahr-Garh highway.

Suresh Kumar said, “The police got information about the incident and reached the spot. After reaching the spot we saw remains of cattle and told people that we will send the same for post-mortem. It was a situation of chaos, our officials noted the statement of people. But all of them were saying different things we tried to make them understand but failed.”

The protesters blocked the roads and pelted stones on the police personnel. In a violent confrontation, mob attacked the police station in Shyana and vandalized at least 15 vehicles, and set some of them on fire. The police later lathicharged and fired into the air to control the agitated mob.

Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh, who once investigated the infamous Akhlaq lynching case, was trying to control mob violence but was shot dead. A cellphone video shows Subodh Singh’s limp body in his car, its windscreen shattered and doors open. The video shows mob shouting “goli maro” (shoot him). The mob also took away his service gun and mobile phone.

A local man was also killed in the mob violence. Also more than five policemen were wounded.

A Special Investigation Team(SIT) has been formed to prob the violence.
