Delhi’s Patiala Court yesterday granted Central Bureau of Investigation’s plea and allowed it to seek custody of Peter Mukherjea for probing the INX Media case, which involves former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram’s son, Karti Chidambaram.

The court allowed CBI to formally arrest Peter and get his custody for five days in order to enable his confrontation with Karti and others accused in the INX Media case. He will remain with CBI till March 31, before being sent back for trial.

Mukherjea is presently facing trial for his alleged involvement the sensational Sheena Bora murder case, for which his wife Indrani and her former husband Sanjeev Khanna have also been charged.

The businessman’s involvement in Karti’s case came to light recently when Indrani had claimed that she had been asked by intermediaries to approach Karti in order to receive government permissions for large sums of money. She had said that she and her husband, Peter, had met Karti and paid over a million Dollars in exchange for approvals from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) in 2007.

INX Media, the Mukherjeas and Karti Chidambaram have also been charged by the Enforcement Directorate over violation of provisions relating to Prevention of Money Laundering Act and Foreign Exchange Management Act.
