The Central government is all set to gather data on Other Backward Classes(OBC) during Census 2021, the Union Home Ministry announced on Friday. “It is envisaged to collect data on OBCs for the first time,” an MHA spokesperson said, News18 reported. This will be the first time that the OBC data will be collected since 1931.

The Ministry released a statement saying, “Rajnath Singh discussed the roadmap for undertaking the Census in 2021. It was envisaged to collect data on OBC for the first time. Use of maps, georeferencing at the time of house listing is also under consideration.”

A review meeting of the functioning of the office of Registrar General and Census Commissioner was attended by Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju, Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba and Registrar General of India Sailesh, besides Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

The statement also said that ‘improvements in design and technological interventions’ will be cinched so that the Census data was finalized within three years of the beginning of the Census operation, reported FirstPost.

Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) stated, “It was emphasised that improvements in design and technological interventions be made so as to ensure that the Census data is finalized within 3 years after conducting of Census. At present it takes around 7 to 8 years to release the complete data.”

OBC leaders have always argued that the current 27 per cent reservation provided to the backward classes in educational institutions and government jobs is not enough when compared to their share in the population.

An MHA official commented, “It will help the government plan and implement policies better for the upliftment of the backward sections of the society,” reported News18.

An official apprised that almost 25 lakh enumerators have been appointed and trained to execute the humongous task of  Census 2021, reported News18.
