Karnataka Transport Minister DC Thammanna has declared that the proposal of not letting the residents of Bengaluru own cars if they don’t own parking spots. This proposition is being debated taking into consideration the current traffic situation. The IT hub of India is facing major crises as public spaces are frequently being utilised to park private vehicles.

This idea, if passed will be leading a larger section of the crowd to be utilising public transport and the underground railways. As stated by the Thammanna, “…The department hopes the new rule will discourage people from purchasing new cars and opt for public transport such as the BMTC and Metro”

Earlier when Venkaiah Naidu had also proposed a centrailsed law to be passed which made parking space mandatory for owning a private car was not carried forward. This is a first of its kind step to be undertaken by a state government. However, this action will not be taken at random as it has been assured.

“But before that, we will advocate and encourage people to carpool and use public transport instead of private transport. We will take this up as a campaign for the next one year in coordination with the Urban Development Department. If the response from people is not favourable, it will become inevitable for us to impose restrictions. We will take people’s opinion before that,” said Thammanna.

There are several lapses in the Bangalore traffic also as metro stations are also being planned without making any provisions for bus stands at the station. Thus an initiative of also of having ‘integrated development’ of departments.

A petition on “No parking, no car” has also been circulating in the Change.org website which was addressed to the Central Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari voicing similar areas of concern as faced in the Karnataka city.
