In a bid to review the condition of Assam state after the implementation of the NRC exercise, Congress party has constituted a six-member committee of the All India Congress Committee to assess the situation.

According to the confirmed reports, senior leaders like Mukul Wasnik and Jairam Ramesh have been included in the committee. The committee will visit the North-eastern region from November 5-15, and after a careful observation of the ground-reality, it will submit a report to the Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi.

NRC (National Register of Citizens) was implemented in the Assam region to remove the illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. Only the genuine Indian citizens with valid credentials of citizenship are being allowed to stay on the list. The latest publication of the NRC list was published on 31 August that saw the exclusion of 19 lakh people. A total of 3.11 crore names have been included in the list.

After the publication of the NRC list, many opposition parties alleged the “manipulation of data“. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee even termed the exercise as ‘fiasco‘. Trinamool Congress even organized a protest on 12 September to express its displeasure with the NRC exercise.
