Against the government’s decision to scrap Article 370, CPI-M (Communist Party of India-Marxist) announced that it will hold a protest on All-India level on 7 August. The party describes the Modi government’s decision as a big blow to Democracy.

The Bill to change the structure of Jammu and Kashmir and scrap 370 has been moved in Lok Sabha today. It has already been approved by Rajya Sabha on Monday with 125 votes in favor to 61 against it.

Home Minister Amit Shah announced that his government has decided to revoke Article 370 which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, due to which the state enjoyed certain special privileges. The erstwhile state could define its own residents under Article 35A, have its own state flag and its own constitution. Due to 370 provisions, many acts of the Indian government were not applicable to the state.

CPI-M issued a statement announcing all-India protest, which said that the move to revoke Article 370 is against the unity of the nation. Such a unilateral step has only betrayed the Kashmiri population and eroded the spirit of the Constitution.

It attacked the team of BJP-RSS rulers for playing with the structure of federalism. The party condemned the decision, calling it an attack on the diversity of the country. The Party’s official statement read that the government should have followed the dialogue process.

Other opposition parties have also openly shown their dissatisfaction over the resolution. While Nationalist Conference party abstained from the voting, All India Trinamool Congress staged a walkout in Lok Sabha today.

Expressing their discontent, Congress party has issued an amendment notice opposing the Resolution Bill.

Even West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee rejected the Bill and dubbed this as a unilateral decision. She said that the ruling party should have taken all the stakeholders in confidence.
