Delhi fire tragedy: How it all started

More than 140 illegal factories were operational in the narrow lane of Anaj Mandi of Karta Gauri Shankar. The fire started from the 600sq yard factory which had cardboard, ladies purse and paper box factory on the three floors. 59 workers were sleeping on the top floor and the building has only single entry and exit.

Earlier it was 600 sq yards Dal godown. Mohammad Rahim bought this plot ten years back and divided it among his three sons – Rehan, Shan e-lahi and Imran – 200 yards each. Fire occurred in Rehan’s portion which is the center and an FIR has been lodged against him. The owner is absconding and has not been detained yet.

However, local police have been asked to keep an eye on any commercial activities in highly congested area. The case has now been transferred to the crime branch and forensic examination will be done once cooling down operations are over.

Massive fire broke out at 5AM on Sunday, at a luggage manufacturing factory in north Delhi and claimed lives of 43 people. People who lost their lives were labourers who were sleeping in the factory in Anaj Mandi on Rani Jhansi Road.
