AAP-led Delhi Government on Wednesday gave a green signal to the Phase-IV of the Delhi Metro. The approval was given at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

The Phase IV will have six corridors: Rithala-Bawana-Narela, Janakpuri West-RK Ashram, Mukundpur-Maujpur, Inderlok-Indraprastha, Aero City-Tughlakabad, and Lajpat Nagar-Saket G Block.

Over 103.93 km long Phase IV will have 79 stations and around 20 interchange points.

For the first time, the Delhi government will also construct elevated roads under 3 metro corridors—Rithala-Bawana-Narela, Janakpuri West-RK Ashram, and Mukundpur-Maujpur. According to the Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, the entire cost for the construction of elevated roads by DMRC will be borne by the Delhi government.

The overall construction cost for Phase IV is estimated to be around Rs 45,000 crores, out of which the Delhi government will pay a share of Rs 9,707 crore.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal also tweeted the good news for Delhiites. He said that after making “revolutionary changes” in the areas of education, health, electricity, and water, now the Delhi government is set to transform the transport sector. He also claimed that the move will reduce pollution in the national capital.

Phase IV of Delhi Metro is slated to complete by 2024.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will start work on all the six corridors as soon as it receives approval from the Centre.

Metro Fare

Deputy CM Manish Sisodia hit out at BJP over the 2017 metro fare hike which subsequently led to a dip in the number of metro riders.

He said, “Metro should be affordable for everyone, including a rickshaw puller and an auto driver. They compare DMRC fares with fares in global cities, but do they also check the GDP and minimum wages prevalent there? Who do you want to run the Metro for?”

Addressing the Delhi Assembly, he said, “Give us the right to decide fares… like you demand taxes from us.”
He claimed that if given the power, the Delhi government will reduce the metro fares by at least 20-25%.
