Addressing a massive rally in Chennai to unveil the statue of his father, K Karunanidhi, DMK Chief MK Stalin proposed the name of Rahul Gandhi as the Prime Ministerial Candidate for the upcoming general elections 2019 to take on what he called the “destructive governance” of the BJP-led NDA government.

Stalin talking about Rahul Gandhi he said: “We will install a new Prime Minister in Delhi, and I propose the candidature of Rahul Gandhi from Tamil Nadu.” Stalin also asked all the opposition parties to join hands of Congress President and ‘save the nation’.

MK Stalin launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and accused him of ‘destroying the country’, constitutional institutions.  He said Modi’s five years has taken India back 15 years. If we give another chance to him, surely the country will go 50 years back. PM Modi is behaving like a king, that’s why we’ve all come together to safeguard democracy & country.

In a bid to lead a show of Opposition parties, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu, DMK chief M K Stalin, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, and Congress president Rahul Gandhi were present in the function.

MK Stalin recalled how the late DMK, Karunanidhi founder had “wholeheartedly welcomed” Indira Gandhi in 1980 and Sonia Gandhi in 2004 “to take crucial political positions”.

UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi in the event said as quoted by ANI:’ It’s my desire that mutual support of our parties to each other remain strong as when Karunanidhi ji was guiding us, as we wage together a battle with political forces that are determined to destroy our constitutional values&the idea of India as we know it

Rahul Gandhi said Karunanidhi defended the voice of the people of Tamil Nadu, “While Karunanidhi Ji defended institutions of this country, today we’ve a govt that is attacking voice, culture, institutions of Tamil Nadu&our country. In memory of Karunanidhi Ji, all voices in India are going to get together & defeat BJP in next election” he added.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan and his Andhra counterpart N Chandrababu Naidu also spoke at the event.

Reacting on the proposed Name of Rahul Gandhi by MK Stalin, D Raja said: ‘DMK President has proposed Rahul Gandhi should become the Prime Minister. All the other parties, particularly secular democratic parties, left parties will have to give consideration & deliberate on this issue. Let us see in the coming days how things are going to end’

While Samajwadi Party leader Ghanshyam Tiwari said: “It is the mandate of the people that will decide who the prime minister of the nation will be”.

The TMC, the Samajwadi Party, Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) disagree with Stalin’s announcement. It is premature. The PM name is to be decided only after the Lok Sabha results,” a top opposition leader told PTI.
