The Former Chief Minister of Puducherry, S Ramassamy passes away at the age of 80, after a brief illness at his residence.

Ramassamy entered into politics from his school days itself. From 1969 to 1973, he was the Home mister in the DMK-CPI coalition ministry. He then, shifted to the AIADMK in 1973. In 1974 he became the Chief Minister heading the AIADMK-CPI coalition ministry for a brief period. Again, in 1977, he was the  Chief Minister in the AIADMK government, for a little period of over one year.

In 1985 and 1990, he successfully contested as Independent from Karaikal. He then joined Congress in 1992. Chief Minister V Narayanasamy, was among those who paid their last condolences to the leader.
