The Modi government is likely to change the name of the three most visited islands in Andaman. The Havelock Island will be named as Swaraj Dweep, Neil Island as Shaheed Dweep and Ross Island as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island.

Although the Ministry of Home Affairs has cleared the proposal, the new names will be formally announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Port Blair on December 30. The other plans for the islands will also be announced then. The visit will mark the 75th anniversary of Subhas Chandra Bose’s historic visit to the islands.

The prime minister will also be accompanied by Home Minister Rajanth Singh on his visit to Port Blair. PM will hoist a 150-meter-high national flag at Port Blair to mark the anniversary of freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s declaration of the establishment of the Azad Hind government on December 30, 1943, at the Gymkhana Ground (now Netaji Stadium) in Port Blair. Netaji was accompanied by Sarvashri Anand Mohan Sahay, Captain Rawat-ADC and Col DS Raju. Bose announced that the islands were the first Indian territory to be freed from British rule.

The West Bengal BJP Vice-President Chandra Kumar Bose, who is a relative of Subhas Chandra Bose, wrote to the PM urging him to rename the Andaman & Nicobar Islands as the ‘Shaheed and Swaraj Islands’as named by Netaji.
