In the assembly by-poll of Radhanpur constituency of Gujarat, Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Alpesh Thakor lost the elections with a margin of 3,807 votes.

The leader lost to Congress leader Desai Raghubhai Merajbhai who secured 77,410 votes. Alpesh Thakor had secured 73,603 votes as per the official data released by the Election Commission of India.

Alpesh Thakor had joined the ruling saffron party at an official function held in its headquarters at Gandhinagar in the presence of Gujarat Bharatiya Janata Party president Jitu Vaghani. He had quit the party because he accused the Congress party of ignoring him and his Thakor community in the state in the national elections.

Alpesh Thakor was a former MLA from Radhapur and an OBC Leader from Koli Thakor Community. Before the December 2017 state elections, he had joined the Congress and later got elected from the Radhanpur assembly constituency in Patan district.

Speaking on the event today, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Dinesh Gundu Rao posted a tweeted message for all rebels of the Congress party. The tweet read: “Be it Alpesh Thakor or Udayanraje Bhosale, nearly all the turncoats who cheated the electorate and their party by joining the BJP have been defeated.
