gurgaon gurugram

Giving it a green nod on tuesday, the central government has accepted Haryana Government’s proposal to rename Gurgaon as Gurugram today.

Speaking on this, Chief Minister of Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar, who was attending the first meet of state’s Swarna Jayanti (Golden Jubilee) celebrations, said that the central government has accepted the proposal of the state government to rename the city after Mahabharat’s historic place. From 27th September, 2016 onwards, the city and district headquarter of Gurgaon will officially be known as Gurugram.

The first step towards this name change was taken earlier this yer on April 12th. The proposal was sent to the central government. Both the central and state government are of the same political party, so the proposal didn’t really face any challenge. However, the speed at which the proposal has been implemented, has raised a few eye balls.

Speaking on the development, Swaraj Abhiyan founder Yogendra Yadav, who was initially a member of Aam Aadmi Party and contested 2014 loksabha election from Gurgaon, stated that he wish the government works with the same speed and dedication to change the face of the city as changing only the name isn’t enough. He pointed out towards the infrastructure of the city to be in a real bad situation. He further stated that being a person born and brought up in the city, he will continue to call it with the old name.

Rao Inderjit Singh, Member of Parliament from Gurgaon welcomed the news and said that only changing the name will not do any good. There needs to be a lot of development to make Gurugram a world-class city.

The proposal to change Gurgaon’s name has been underway since 2010. In 2010, Rajesh Khullar, former MCG commissioner and now the principal secretary of Manohar Lal Khattar proposed this name change, however, not much was done until recently.

One of the main reasons behind the promptness of implementing the decision seems to be the golden jubilee celebrations of the state. Haryana, as a state, was formed in 1966 and this year on November 1st, the state government is hosting a big event to mark the beginning of year long .
